Bacon Wrapped Cheese Filled Figs!

Foodwhirl friend Talk of Tomatoes sends us the lovely idea for Bacon Week! Grilled food is always fun, and as Janelle points out, there’s nothing wrong with grilling in the winter.. I have been told—even chastised—for not heating up the grill in the dead of winter. I am beginning to heed that advice, taking off […]

Bacon Wrapped Jalapeno Poppers

You know it’s really hard to do a bacon recipe when you don’t eat bacon!   It’s not that I don’t like bacon, I really love it!  But about 5 years ago, I somehow became allergic to all pork, beef and lamb, so bacon had to be struck from my meal plans.  No BLT, no bacon […]

What, exactly is Bacon?

We’re in the middle of Bacon Week here at Foodwhirl and it’s time we had a discussion on what exactly bacon is. Bacon is a type of cured pork.  You hear of turkey bacon or lamb bacon or tofu bacon- these products are not bacon, they are simply treated in a manner to resemble bacon.  […]

Bacon! How about Bacon Vodka?

Welcome to day 4 of Bacon Week! This is an oldie but goodie… I remember when Brownie Points posted this way back in 2008 and I was inspired to go draw up a cartoon pig bacon vodka label*, and give a friend of mine a “Bacon Vodka Kit”** for Christmas. But maybe, just maybe, you’ve […]

Happy Saint Patty’s day: just add pesto.

Sure you have to wear green so you won’t be pinched. I used to throw in a bright green hair ribbon when I was little, and I think we pinned on clovers more than once. Why not give green to your food too? Or greenify your kids’ lunches or get in the spirit during dinner? […]

How to Slice a Bell Pepper

There are many ways to slice or chop up a bell pepper, but this method will give you nice, neat slices or lovely little square cubes. For a dish where neatness and presentation count, I’d use the neat slices of pepper, and save the ‘less neat’ pieces to throw into an omelet or salad later.

Here’s a quick little picture tutorial to show you what to do!

Guinness Corned Beef

Right now Niki is detailing how to actually corn a beef over in the Seasonal/Holiday category —–> How I got lucky There are still some days remaining until St. Patricks Day, so there is still time to brine your own Corned Beef.  For the first time ever I am actually considering it.  Niki is an […]

How to cook Bacon in the Oven, and More!

Foodwhirl’s lovely friend Carissa, from Good N Crazy, had a great bacon filled post last week that I wanted to include in Bacon Week. Low Sugar Mocha Tapioca

Tapioca pudding is such a classic “comfort dessert.”  But since some members of my family have sugar-restricted diets, I developed this version. I removed the refined sugar, added some dark chocolate, and now everyone loves it – even my sugar-eaters! A touch of espresso and a bit of vanilla delivers a lovely mocha flavor. This recipe […]

Bacon! Bacon, Cheddar, Jalapeno Cornbread

One of my favorite meals growing up was a simple bowl of navy beans and cornbread.  Every time I would go to my grandparents’ house to visit, my grandmother would always fix this simple but flavorful meal for me the first night I was there.  I still love this combination, and make it occasionally for […]

Festive Potato Salad

You just can’t beat homemade potato salad with BBQ!    I had several organic potatoes from my Gaia’s Greens CSA box and needed to use them before they started growing in my kitchen, and as the Universe would have it, I also needed a side dish to take to a cookout yesterday.   This potato salad made […]

Making homemade pasta

Although dried pasta is quite inexpensive and extremely convenient, there is something to be said for knowing exactly what is going into the food that you’re consuming.  There is also something to be said for de-stressing while enjoying a nice glass of wine and vigorously kneading an elastic ball of pasta dough.  Not to mention […]
