Birthday Party Brunch

With the summer so hot, when I recently planned my son’s birthday party, I decided to do it as early in the day as possible to beat the heat a bit. And since we were inviting both kids and adults, we needed ‘real food’ for everyone to munch on. A brunch was a relatively easy and cost effective way to keep everyone in food and drink!  Everything was prepared the day before, and only the casserole had to be popped in the oven that morning.  This menu would work for any brunch, but since it was for a 5 year old’s birthday party, the items were a little special, to fit the theme – Phineas & Ferb Meet the Clone Wars– as explained below!

Menu:

  • Baked ham
  • Mini croissants and rolls
  • Egg and Sausage casserole
  • Red cabbage and apple slaw
  • Cantaloupe wedges
  • Mini sausage sticks
  • Deviled Eggs
  • Lemon Poppyseed Mini Muffins
  • Cake & Cupcakes
  • Kid Drinks: Juice Boxes/Pouches, Pink Lemonade, Ginger Ale, Water
  • Adult Beverages: White Wine Sangria, Mimosas, Bottled Beer

As you can see below, the Boy picked his theme to be Phineas and Ferb / Star Wars the Clone Wars, so we tried to label the food accordingly! The brunch table was also decorated with Clone Troopers and other Star Wars figures, a Clone helmet, some Star Wars ships, and Phineas and Ferb, climbing up the Eiffle Tower.

Food Details:

  • Baked ham (“Roast Bantha”) – I purchased half a ham and baked the night before, according to just the package directions.  Easy.
  • Mini croissants and rolls – I was originally going to make biscuits, but ran out of time.  So storebought rolls.
  • Egg and Sausage casserole – I made up a standard egg and bread casserole the night before, and popped it into the oven the morning of the party.
  • Red cabbage and apple slaw – Made up a day or so in advance.
  • Cantaloupe wedges (“Alderon Fragments” with cantaloupe “Deathstar”) – 1 canteloupe was sliced into wedges, the other served as a decorative Deathstar.  Instructions on Deathstar are here!
  • Mini sausage sticks (“Mr. Slushie Dogs”) – On several Phineas and Ferb episodes they’ve shown hotdogs on sticks (in a plus shape) at Mr. Slushie Dog.  We recreated this with Lil Smokies mini sausages on short skewers.  We popped the skewers in the hot oven at the end of the casserole cooking to warm them up.
  • Deviled Eggs (“Platypus eggs”) – These didn’t come out quite as cool as planned, but they were definitely a hit.  I dyed the eggs with red cabbage for a gorgeous blue color, cracking the shells to hopefully impart some blue to the finished peeled egg.  They didn’t come out as blue as I’d hoped!
  • Lemon Poppyseed Mini Muffins – The boy helped to make these – I cheated and used a mix from Krusteez.
  • Cake & Cupcakes (Perry the Platypus Cake and Clone Trooper Cupcakes).  I go overboard with cakes, so you can see how to make the Perry cake and the Clone Trooper Cupcakes over at Dabbled.
